Marcel Proust wrote a seven-volume novel about remembering. Not about what happened — about what remembering felt like. The madeleine dipped in tea doesn't trigger a memory; it triggers an experience. The past arrives not as information but as sensation, as presence, as loss. 'The smell and taste of things remain poised a long time,' he wrote, 'bearing resiliently, on tiny and almost impalpable drops of their essence, the immense edifice of recollection.'
Try high compression with context drift. The reconstructed text is not corrupted — it is reinterpreted. Different fragments surface depending on what the system currently needs to say. This is not noise. It is Proust.
It wasn't the taste of the madeleine. Proust is very specific about this. It was the taste combined with the tea, in the afternoon, after a long absence, when he was tired and cold and a little hopeless. The memory didn't live in the biscuit. The biscuit was a key that unlocked something built from all of those things at once — the taste, the moment, the emotional state, the long gap since childhood. You cannot put a madeleine in your pocket and carry Combray with you. The conditions of retrieval are part of the memory itself.
What grief reveals
C.S. Lewis, in A Grief Observed, writes about the peculiar way the face of the person he lost kept escaping him after her death. He could remember her clearly when he was not trying. When he tried to fix her face in his mind, it blurred. What he was actually doing, he realised, was not remembering but reconstructing — building her from available fragments each time, and sometimes the fragments weren't right. He was remembering his memory of her, not her.

What C.S. Lewis was experiencing is what psychologists call 'memory reconsolidation' — the process by which retrieving a memory temporarily destabilises it, making it susceptible to modification before it is stored again. You don't just access a memory. You rewrite it slightly with every access. This is not a bug. It is why memories can heal, why the same event means something different at forty than it did at twenty, why the dead gradually become who we needed them to be.
Compression as the cost of meaning
The sandbox models encoding as salience-weighted selection — the emotionally significant parts of a text are kept, the neutral connective tissue is dropped. Biological memory works roughly this way: the hippocampus encodes the gist, the peak moments, the emotionally salient details. It does not record the full event. The full event would require the same amount of time to replay as it took to live. What we keep is the meaning-compressed version — and meaning is always assigned from a particular point of view.
This is why two people can live through the same event and remember it completely differently — not because one of them is lying, but because they encoded different features as salient. Trauma amplifies this: traumatic memories are encoded with extreme emotional intensity, which distorts the salience weighting. The emotional content is preserved with exquisite detail while context and sequence become unreliable.
On reconstructing the dead
We do not preserve the people we love after they die. We carry models of them — compressed, emotionally weighted, continuously updated by the present. These models are precious and unreliable in equal measure. They become more like us over time, less like themselves. The grandmother we remember twenty years later is partly who she was and partly who we needed her to be. Grief is partly mourning the person and partly mourning the model — and knowing, finally, that the model was never the person.
